Scaling
Scaling
The first step to good oral health—prevents loose teeth, gum inflammation, and bad breath.
What Is Scaling?
Scaling is a basic dental procedure using special instruments to remove hardened calculus (tartar) and bacterial deposits from tooth surfaces, between teeth, and below the gumline—areas that a regular toothbrush can’t reach. Beyond cosmetic cleaning, scaling prevents gingivitis and periodontitis, the main causes of tooth mobility and loss over time.
What Is Dental Calculus?
Dental calculus (tartar) forms when plaque accumulates on teeth and gums and isn’t removed within 24–72 hours. Minerals in saliva then harden these deposits into calculus, which harbors bacteria and triggers gum inflammation. Left unchecked, these bacteria can enter the bloodstream, increasing risks for heart disease and complicating diabetes control.
✅ Benefits of Scaling
- Prevents gingivitis and periodontal disease.
- Reduces bleeding gums and bad breath.
- Lowers risk of loose or prematurely lost teeth.
- Firms up and improves gum health.
- Whitens teeth by removing surface stains from tea, coffee, and tobacco.
- Enhances overall oral hygiene by clearing hard-to-reach debris.
Scaling vs. Polishing
- Scaling removes hardened deposits from tooth surfaces and beneath the gums.
- Polishing uses a prophylaxis paste and a rubber cup or brush to smooth enamel, making it more stain-resistant and shiny.
Both steps are typically performed together during a routine biannual cleaning.
How Often Should You Get Scaling?
- Every 6 months for people with healthy mouths.
- Every 3–4 months for those prone to heavy tartar build-up, gum disease, or who smoke.
- More frequently for orthodontic patients or those wearing retainers, since appliances can trap plaque.
Does Scaling Hurt?
Usually, no—but you may feel some sensitivity or mild gum irritation, especially if gums are inflamed or calculus is thick. Your dentist can adjust technique or use a topical anesthetic if needed.
Post-Scaling Care
- Avoid very hot or cold foods and drinks for the first 24 hours.
- Brush gently with a soft-bristle brush and floss daily.
- Rinse with a mild saline solution or gentle mouthwash to soothe gums.
- Mild bleeding or sensitivity in the first day or two is normal.
- Continue regular dental check-ups—at least every six months—to monitor gum health.
