Fillings
Dental Filling
Repairing teeth damaged by decay, cracks, or wear before it reaches the pulp.
What Is a Dental Filling?
A dental filling is a fundamental restorative procedure aimed to:
- Halt the progression of tooth decay.
- Restore the shape and function of the tooth.
- Prevent bacteria from entering the pulp chamber.
- Reduce the risk of future tooth loss.
During the procedure, the dentist removes decayed tooth material and fills the resulting cavity with a restorative material, allowing the tooth to function normally and alleviating pain or sensitivity.
What Causes Tooth Decay?
Decay is caused by oral bacteria that metabolize sugars and produce acids, which gradually erode enamel and create cavities. If left untreated, decay can reach the pulp, necessitating root‐canal treatment or extraction.
Common Filling Materials
Composite Resin (Tooth‐Colored Filling)
- Matches natural tooth color for an inconspicuous result.
- Bonds strongly to the tooth structure.
- Suitable for both front and back teeth.
- Ideal for patients concerned with aesthetics.
- Can be sculpted precisely to each tooth’s anatomy.
Lifespan: Typically 5–10 years or longer with good care.
Temporary Filling
- Used during root‐canal therapy or to monitor a tooth before placing a permanent filling.
- Less durable than permanent materials.
- Must be replaced with a permanent filling at a follow‐up visit.
Filling Technique
Dentists use a bonding technique to prepare the tooth surface for optimal adhesion. The filling material is placed in layers, each cured (hardened) with a special light, until the tooth’s original shape is restored.
Procedure Duration
- Small cavity: ~20–30 minutes.
- Medium to large cavity: ~40–60 minutes. (or more)
- Back teeth with extensive decay may require an inlay/onlay or crown instead of a simple filling.
Post‐Filling Care
- Avoid hard or sticky foods for the first 24 hours.
- If you experience sensitivity, rinse with warm salt water or a mild mouthwash.
- Brush gently with a soft‐bristle brush and floss daily.
- Schedule regular check‐ups so your dentist can monitor the filling’s condition.
